Murky cloudy reddish brown color . Around a medium body with medium carbonation.
Aro.a is malt, some barrel and rye, mild sour funk , dried dark fruit, a dry grape juice
Taste is very similar to aroma, slightly sweet. It's also a bit dry and the sour funk is subdued

22 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Had 11/18/17.
Pours near black, opaque, with a two inch plus, thick foamy head with lots of foamy cling. It did gush a bit on the open. Smells tart and somewhat sour. Aromas of malt, bourbon, rye, rye whiskey, raisins, prunes, dates, some figs. Tastes of rye, rye whiskey, malt, dates, figs, plums, raisins. Some tartness and sourness, also some acidity. No noticeable bourbon presence. A solid medium to full body, a touch harsh, highly carbonated and a little fizzy.
Great aroma and flavor, well crafted and balanced. The tart and sour wears down and the feel was not great, but I’m a big fan of their annual series, and I really enjoyed this.

I was happy to see this in a local shop, as someone who has enjoyed previous releases of the Funky Jew'belation; several years ago, I also originally read the tagline on the label as "L-chain, sucka" and wondered what exactly an L-chain was, so there's that. In any case, the 2017 iteration sports the same grassy, brett funk that I've come to expect from earlier years, with some dried, candied pineapple, jujube, and umami on the nose. The flavor is quite a melange, with significant hop character, some Montmorency cherry, some lemon, and other varied notes. That's what I like about this series; it's consistently an over-the-top, mad science experiment that somehow comes together as an enjoyable experience. While the recipe is changed each year, the experience is consistently positive but "out there." Good on ya, Shmaltz, and l'chaim, sucka!

Poured a dark, dark brown color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled boozy and fruity. Sour up front but not overly sour. Good fruity taste and very smooth.
