Had this at my wife's 2nd cousin's Guesthouse in Gutach, Germany. Served in a pils glass, they called it a "dunkel pils".

Came in a pils glass, a shade darker than brown, but in the tall thin glass it was interesting to look at (i'd never had such a dark beer until then in this type of glass).

Huge aroma of fresh all grain bread, a aroma of dough, fresh bread yeast and dark malts. Flavor was quite the same, fresh dark malt, a balanced hop flavor and bitterness and a candy-malty finish.

Wow! I could have drank this lager from dusk till dawn till dusk... incredible lager if you can get it fresh!

I got this beer from the brewery store on my last visit to Germany. I was intrigued by the name and trying a type of beer that I thought I had never tried before not thinking that it was a Schwarzbier. As a Schwarzbier I really enjoyed this beer. It poured a nice think foamy head. The beer had a clear dark amber color. The aroma had a fruity malt character with a hint of hops. The mouthfeel was light to medium bodied. The flavor was of caramel with a hint of roastiness. There was also a residual flavor of hops. The finish was a little dry and disappear pretty quickly. Overall a good example of the Schwarzbier style.
