Brewed using a historical recipe from Bamberg's first documented brewery, "Brauerei Michaelsberg", for the "Bamberger Stiftsgarten" (a part of the same monastery that the Michaelsberg brewery originally belonged to). The brewery was active from around 1122 to 1969. This beer was brewed using hops from Spalt and the "Hopfengarten Bamberg", which has reintroduced hop cultivation in Bamberg. Schlenkerla used their official name "Hellerbräu" for this historical beer, since Konrad Graser who was a brewer at the Michaelsberg Brewery, later took over Hellerbräu (Schlenkerla) in 1866!

A: Amber, slightly hazy, no real head of lacing to speak of.

S: The smell suggested the beer had really taken on the aroma of the ancient wooden tanks at Schlenkerla.

T: Tasted like a beer brewed by Heller Trum, but didn't have the smoked meaty taste of the other beers, finished with a hit of brown sugar.

M: Medium body, low carbonation.

O: Instantly recognisable as a beer from the Schlenkerla stable, didn't quite have the characteristics of some of the other beers, but very good.

FRom the half liter bottle, it pours a slightly clouded amber with reddish notes and a nice off-white head that slowly reduces and leaves lacing. The nose gets a dose of light citrus and muted smoke. Taste is smokey malt with hop notes. Mouthfeelis medium to heavy, in a pleasant way.

Pours a slightly clouded amber to brown color with a huge, stable spongy head.

Smells of sea salt, smoked malts, barley and a lighter flowery hop note.

Mouthfeel on this is light and refreshing with a thirst quenching, sparkly effervescence.

Tastes of meaty camp fire smoke, toasty malts among lighter caramel and lingering, dry herbal hops. Its hops turn more prominent then, spicy and bitter with a lasting dry bite to it, blending outstandingly well into the prominent, smoky malt foundation of the beer. Finishes with a note of burned nuts, autumn flowers and bakers chocolate, together with receding, yet noteably dry and present hops.

Very well nuanced Smoked with an unforseen, well working bitterness to it, taking the style basicly to the next level.
