Aecht Original Schlenkerla Maerzen Smokebeer, considered the classic example in its category, has been brewed for centuries in the baroque town of Bamberg in Franconia (Bavaria/Germany). Following the most ancient malting traditions, all its select barley malts are kilned over a fire of beech wood logs at the Schlenkerla maltings. Brewed in classic copper vessels and matured for months in 14th century cellars, Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier is a truly unique smoky beer experience.

This is quite possibly one of the worst beers I’ve ever had. Maybe my palate doesn’t quite catch on. The smoke is as if someone dumped in a cup of liquid smoke. I would say tame that flavor to a hint for cryin’ out loud.

From a 500ml bottle dated BB 02 2025, so a bit old. Poured into a pint glass. A scant one finger tan head on a very dark clear reddish brown. The head diminished to a thin layer that sticks around. Strings of fine lacing.
Strong beechwood smoke in the nose. The smoke dominates the flavour. Beechwood, peat and leather. Landjaeger sausage. A long dry finish.
Smooth and well balanced.. Medium body and soft carbonation. Billed as a smoked Marzen, it is really more of a Rauchbier. This beer is all about the balance. Well worth a try.

Copenhagen 22/4 2018. 50 cl bottle from Meny, Kbh Ø. Very serious looking Monk inspired Document with most things written in Gothic letters on the label.
Pours clear dark brown with a red tinge and a mid-sized off-white head. Settles as a thin layer of foam struggling to cover the surface of the beer. Very moderate lacing.
Aroma is intense and rather smoky. Smoked malts, peat and salty salami. Some sweet malts in the background.
Light carbonation. Slightly thick texture.
Flavor is medium sweet followed by slightly lighter bitterness. Aftertaste is sweetish, smoky and peaty.
A Smoked Beer that does exactly what it is supposed to.

Smells like smoked German sausage. Tastes mostly like smoked German sausage. Also wood smoke, medicinal herbs, brown sugar, subtle dried cherry and fig, underlying floral and fresh grass notes. A unique experience. The closest beer comes to Islay Scotch.

Pours a clear chestnut color with a hefty off white/light tan head that lasts nicely and droops elegantly down the glass.
The aroma is smokey from the jump but not overwhelmingly so. It's a bit...ummm...almost meaty...but with that there is a nice toasty brown bread malty smell, some coffee, a little chocolate. Brown sugar and some earthiness.
The smoke is much more contained,or maybe wrapped up around like a blanket, the overall flavor. Much more balanced than the nose led me to think. There's a nice sweetness to the beer and just a hint of tartness. I don't feel that the smoke taste is meaty at all - its just smokey liked smoked wood should be. A bit of caramel, and I'll stick with the warm brown bread maltiness. There's a faint herbal earthy hop taste. I do pick up a little chocolate and a wee bit of coffee.
The feel is light heading to medium. Carbonation is mild and the beer drinks smoothly and richly which I did not expect. It finishes a little dry with some sweet carryover and smokiness. Mild bitterness. Oddly, I get an impression of maple syrup in the aftertaste after repeated sips.
This is a very nice brew. I could drink this any time. A lot of flavor in a light feeling, easy drinking beer. I don't find the smoke overwhelming. It's quite complimentary to the other flavors.

One pint bottle. Pours a dark black with a tan head. Smike and malt smells. Distinctive smakey and malty tastes with a full body and medium carbonation. One if my favorites.
