"Karhu Tupa-Humala." Double hopped Karhu with Saaz and Goldings hops.
56.8cl can purchased at a Siwa market in Kuopio, Finland, and served cold into a mason jar. Truncated notes below from a live review.
A: Pours a generic pale lager appearance with a long-lasting white head indicative of overcarbonation. Body is a predictable clear copper of average vibrance. Retention is ~6 minutes. Looks pretty typical of a pale lager. Meh.
Sm: Perfumey grassy (Saaz) hops, with a generic floral edge. Pale malts, Munich malts, maybe pils malts. Pretty generic; matches the hoi polloi in terms of the style.
Has no stand-out characteristics. But at least the hops are noticeable.
Aromatic intensity is average.
T & Mf: Has a pleasant if slightly off balance of floral & grassy hops and sweeter pale malts & Munich malts, with clean ester-free lager yeast evening it out a bit. The sweetness is overdone, lending this a cheap artificial taste that is matched by its artificial almost buttery mouthfeel. Smooth and wet, but not refreshing. Overcarbonated. Has hints of metallic off-notes. Cheap barley at the core reminds the drinker it's a macro supermarket lager.
O: A notch above the usual pale lager swill, but not as hop-forward as Sinebrychoff's marketing would have you believe. There's nothing here for the discerning drinker, but it's a respectable choice in the "student beer" category. I'd get it again at the right price (~2 euro). It'll meet your modest expectations. On the high side of average.
