I nearly left Mudhook after a single pint, as the Irish red simply wasn't very good. Thankfully I decided to try another.
Deep Sea Stout pours thick and dark. The aroma is thoroughly American: roasted and hoppy, in the vein of Three Floyd's exquisite Black Sun Sout.
The flavor is roasted, bittersour barley up front, clean hops in the middle, and an aggressively dry finish with some lightly floral west coast hops.
Quite nicely done.

On tap at Mudhook 3/31/15. Very dark brown with reddish overtones. Thin tan head. Moderate to light carbonation. Not as full-bodied as it should be for the style.
Inital impression is a slight chocolate-malty sweetness, but that quickly gives way to an odd, almost chemical aftertaste. Not what I was expecting. Would not try again.

Thanks to my bro for Xmas gift growler. Frankly, had lower expectations, but was very pleasantly surprised. Drank beer cold @ 40 degrees, but also @ 55-60 degrees after about 45 minute delay. This beer really took off as it warmed.
A: Normal color and decent head/retention, but liked the ruby accented hue when held up to light. Made me think beer might be more complex than I had anticipated.
S: Nice roastiness, coffee, sweetness. Nicely rounded.
T: Really liked the flavor when it approached cellar to almost room temperature. The roastiness was delicious with coffee and cocoa peeking out of the roasted malt. I found vanilla running through it, and brought to mind a vanilla porter's big burly brother stout.Had a sense of lactose/milk stout like flavors at times.
M: Again, the warmer beer was reasonably full and much better than your standard watery stouts so present in the market.
O: Clap out loud. A nice surprise, and I may be visiting my brother at Mudhook instead of his place next time I'm in York.
