On tap @ the Mudhook Brewing Company (York, PA) on 12/9/11. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a clear copper, with a ½ finger of smooth bright-white foam. This retains at roughly the same level, leaving back some decent look swathes of patchy lacing. Noble hops jump right out in the aroma, with fresh tones of earthy citrus and spice that are surrounded by a light floral feel. There are firm malty notes of caramel and bread across the back, along with a touch of musty Lager yeast.
The taste pretty much mirrors this, with a solid feeling green citric bite that spreads earth and spice outward. This is well balanced by notes of sweet caramel and more of a toasted bread character, which trails a bit of a buttered flavor along with it. The hops definitely have crispness to them though that helps this maintain an overall quenching feel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a firm and lively feeling carbonation that loosens up a bit across the back into more of a sharp creaminess.
You know, this wasn’t really bad at all. It wasn’t overly clean feeling and could have been tightened up a bit for the style but this was certainly a drinkable Oktoberfest. This one was a bit of a surprise.
