On tap @ the Mudhook Brewing Company (York, PA) on 6/1/12. Served in a pint glass. This is a Lager brewed with chocolate from the nearby Wolfgang Candy.
Pours a deep ruddy brown with a thin off-white head. This retains with some foamy ringing, leaving back some light spotty lacing. Cocoa accents jump right out in the aroma, with a touch of tangier caramel and some earthy citric hops to give a ripe flavorful twang in the nose. This seems like it could be a touch more robust.
The taste has a nice chocolate flavor to it but thankfully isn’t coming off as overly sweet either, thanks to a firm dose of earthy hops which keep things in balance. Malty notes of caramel and toast actually add a lot of the sweetness to this across the back, keeping the chocolate at the central focus of this. Those hops lend this a nice crispness, leaving this with some lingering dry bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a prickly feel up front but then spreads out into more of a sharp creaminess across the back. Overall, this is lively in the mouth with a tight and clean feel to it.
Chocolate additions in beer can be tricky but I thought that it was pulled off here pretty nicely, with the chocolate merely adding flavor to this and allowing the base malts to carry a lot of the sweetness. The hops gave this a crisp balancing presence that kept this lively and drinkable in the mouth. This is one of the better beers that I’ve had from here.
