On tap @ the Mudhook Brewing Company (York, PA) on 6/1/12. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a clear pale gold, with a thin layer of bright-white head. This maintains some foamy ringing around the edges of the glass, leaving back patchy swathes of sudsy lacing. The aroma smells of tart lemon, softer fruit, a light floral and spicy feel, and then some sweet graininess along the back. There really isn’t any of the airy finesse here that you normally find for the style.
The taste is similar, with tart fruit, some moderately tight feeling grains, and a tingle of citric bitterness. It’s overall not very flavorful, with no spiciness or perfume-like flowery qualities that different the Kölsch style. A dry finish leaves some lingering bitterness behind. The mouthfeel is lighter to medium bodied, with a crisp and lively feel on the tongue and then a bit more creaminess along the back. This is decent.
I wish there as more to like here but as a Kölsch, this just didn’t get the job done. This needed more finesse and character to it but hopefully it will continue to get worked on in the future.
