Forgot about this until I wanted to do another Beer Review tonight. It looked kinda strange when I saw it in the Store about 4 weeks ago, so I picked a bottle up & forgot all about it. That is until I come to do a Review and cannot find the beer listed anywhere – so here goes for a first!
Presentation: 22oz Cal. Bomber. Aqua colored border on a label that has an impressionist style painted picture of a beach with white painted houses clinging to bluffs. Just says “Hotel Laguna Lager”, that & the fact that it rather strangely lists the strength as “4.7% Alc.Vol. by Volume” – Duh, I heard you the first time! LOL. Also states that this beer is “Brewed & Bottled for the Hotel Laguna & Clae’s Seafood, by Bayhawk Ales, Inc.”.
Appearance: Amber Gold hue, clear body with a serious pillowy head that settles at a slow rate to eventually reveal a stiff white halo collar with a light spattered lacing. Looks rather appetizing I have to say.
Nose: Quite fruity, dense malts mixed with light grain & wholewheat.
Taste: Malty beginnings, lead way into a solid drinking malt-bitter middle. Has a very refreshing aspect to it, reminds me of some light bitters that I drank on Cask in the UK. Malty and slightly bitter, but it's balanced and drinks well. Not complex, but pleasantly solid. A great Session drinking beer for sure.
Mouthfeel: The strong inherent carbonation is very pleasing; it sits nicely in the mouth and has a liquid gold aspect that coats the tongue. Smooth and silky at times.
Drinkability: Highly quaffable, and at 4.7% it drinks well. Rather good actually, the Bomber I had was soon dispatched.
Overall: Rather refreshing, after today’s heat and hassle – a really nice wind down beer. I quite fancy another of these…….damn.
I wonder if they do a Hotel California IPA?
