12 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap acquired at Hi-Times liquor. I've gone through all the other "Honey Blonde" variants listed on beeradvocate and can confirm that this is not one of them; it's different. Maybe Bayhawk brews honey blondes specifically for various restaurants and barbecue joints; I'm not sure. But this label doesn't match what's described in the other reviews, nor does it say "Poorman" or anything like that on it. It's very clearly "Honey Blonde". Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; I enjoyed the Wood Ranch Honey Blonde.
Served straight from the refrigerator. Poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a two finger beige head of some cream, decent thickness, and average retention. Colour is a dull transparent dark yellow. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.
Sm: Cereals, lactose, mead, honey, yeast, clean malts, and resiny nectary sweetness. Actually quite defined and intriguing for the style. Not the usual "straw n barley" aroma of beers in this style. Quite lovely. I'm rather impressed. A moderately strong aroma.
T: Quite nectary and sweet, but at no point artificial. Honey comes through, as do floral and meady notes. Some citrus, mainly lemon peel. Has a sharp bite to it where the floral hop bitterness emerges. Suits the balance nicely. Really clean and tasty, with well chosen malts. The finish is lovely, evoking clove, lilac, and even mango. I'm impressed with this build. Quite acidic for the style, but it works here. A touch lactic, adding an unexpected complex dimension.
Mf: Surprisingly coarse, actually, but it helps bring out the flavour. Sharp and crisp, but also refreshingly wet. Suits the flavours quite nicely. Could use a bit more cream.
Dr: Quite drinkable. A good lawnmowing beer. I expected worse in a blonde; its complexity is shocking. I'd recommend this to friends merely for its unique approach to the style. Hides its slightly above average ABV well. Give it a try. I'm going to keep an eye out for more beers from Bayhawk.
