"Finally, a fresh hop beer that wears flannel year-round, only listens to vinyl, and writes his journal on a typewriter. This rich, fresh amber ale has just the right amount of "you probably haven't heard of it," including a large dose of fresh Chinook hops. In fact, fresh Chinook hops are the only hops used in this beer. Think of them as the single gear on his fixed gear bike, as he rides his skinny-jeaned self into the harvest season." Brewed in the style of a Wet Hop/Harvest Ale IPA. This is the first entry in Monday Night Brewing's one-off reserve "Black Tie Series", released in November 2013. Available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter glass. Served above 53ยบ Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a frothy cream head of a gold-white complexion over a caramel amber body. Clarity is very high aside from fine flecked sediment. Carbonation is moderate. Retention is average, lacing is light and droopy. 3.75
(Smell) Much of the aroma in the glass is from the malt- bready, caramelized, lightly grainy and smooth in composition. Deeper diving yields the impact of wet Chinook hops, a very modest herbaceous and resinous aromatic potency with a mellow perceived bitterness. Potency is moderate. 3.5
(Taste) Chinook hops do bolden the flavor, however. Resinous, peppery and herbal notes effectively counteract the bready, smooth and chewy malt profile. Much like in Monday Night's other 22 oz, The Blind Pirate, I pick up on some unusual metallic or tannin flavor that somewhat distracts the cleanliness of the end result, although in this beer that imperfection is much more subtle. I enjoy the Chinook wet hop variety, as they add a potent herbal spiciness as well as enhance the depth of the body. Bitterness is mild. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, smooth, mildly oily. Carbonation adds some mild crispness and pep to the tongue. Body is medium for the style, medium overall. Alcohol presence is medium+. 4.25
(Overall) Monday Night's big bottle formats have some minor sharpness in the flavor but Hipster maintains itself as an enjoyable harvest ale with a simple malt body and an enjoyable wet hop Chinook flavor. 3.5

22oz bottle from Bullocks (Woodstock, GA). 7.99. No bottling date but this was released fourth quarter 2013. Served in a Monday Night snifter.
Pours hazy deep amber with about two fingers of white head. Decent retention and a good bit of lace.
Subtle but pleasant nose. Wisps of orange and peach with a little biscuit-like malt.
Taste comes across to me as more amber ale than fresh hop. Biscuit, hay, floral earthy hops, cracker, mild pepper, orange peel and a little pear. I get the impression that the hops might not be so fresh any more.
Dry, more light than medium body with zesty carbonation. Cracker and musty orange aftertaste.
I might have waited too long before buying this to try. It drinks like a straight up amber ale. Not bad at all but ot lacks the fresh hop zing I look for in an ale labeled fresh hop.

I'm a fan of fresh hop harvest ales- when they're done right. I've had some absolutely fabulous ones- and the hops in them are always more delicate, herbal, almost waxy compared to ales with dried hops. The problem is that usually a heavy dose of hops needs to be used so you get the subtle flavors fully. I've also had a few where the fresh hops were allowed to sit too long before adding them to the beer- not pleasant, a rotting vegetal tinge to the beers. The problem with Hipster is that it's just too bland. Everything tastes fresh enough (thankfully), but you just don't get enough hop flavor- the whole experience is like drinking attenuated malt water. If they give it another go, I'd double up on the hops- or use different varietals, or both. For now, it's a pass.

A: Pours a clear, light amber/dark golden color with two fingers of thick white head. Retention and lacing are both remarkable. A very pretty beer.
S: Fresh, grassy hops are upfront but not overpowering in this beer. A bit fruity, but mostly grassy and a bit piney. Mild bready malts show up behind the hops with a touch of caramel sweetness. Mild and pleasant.
T: Fruity and piney hop flavor are much stronger in the flavor than in the aroma. I would guess that there are a lot of late addition hops here. Bready, buscuity malts are there, but hops certainly take center stage. Bitterness is low.
M: Light mouthfeel with creamy carbonation.
O: A very nice fresh hop beer. Very easy to drink with a great hop flavor.
