Sympathy Weight is a classic wee heavy scotch ale aged in maple bourbon barrels. With aromas of chocolate and raspberry on the nose, this 12% ABV ale has a smooth mouthfeel. The sweetness of the maple syrup balances the smokiness of the malts, resulting in a sultry, layered ale.

Appearance: Dark black, fluffy khaki head with good retention
Aroma: Bourbon, alcohol noticeable, wood
Flavor & Aftertaste: Sweet, subtle bourbon and wood flavor. Alcohol is well hidden for 12%.
Mouth-feel: Full bodied, soft. Medium length aftertaste
Overall: This is a 2018 bottled version. Time has definitely tamed this down. The alcohol is well hidden for a 12% abv beer. It's sweet, soft and rounded. Bourbon flavor is not overwhelming like most like this one. Nice mouth-feel, no acid bite or astringency. I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Some of these BBA beers are little to heavy and alcoholic for my preferences.

L - 1.5 finger fluffy tan head atop a cola-black body.
S - smoked malt, caramel, molasses.
T - lots of smoked malt. Maple syrup, caramel, molasses, oak, vanilla. No bitterness. Moderate-low sweetness. Low booziness.
F - medium to medium-light body with higher than normal carb.
O - really dig the flavors, just wish the body was more substantial.

look: Dark copper, some ruby highlights. Nice fat tan head with messy lacing.
smell: Rich maple and bourbon nose.
taste: Mild on the wee heavy but heavy on the maple and bourbon and that's just fine.

500mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 12.99. 2018 vintage, released 11/18. Served in a Monday Night snifter. Enjoyed 12/21/18.
Pours a rich, deep chestnut brown with ample pale khaki head. The initial froth fades slowly to a thin edging and some scattered dots of lace.
Smells of glazed smoked malt, caramel, maple, vague chocolate covered berries, bread and wet wood.
Tastes malty and a bit boozey. Maple-coated smoked cereal grains, a seedy berry character, burnt caramel, bourbon-kissed oak, cocoa, browned marshmallow and a warming alcohol presence.
Smooth full body with fairly soft carbonation. There is a mildly bitter bite to the finish with notes of maple, burnt French toast and smoked bourbon.
Another mighty fine release from the barrel laboratory that Monday Night calls The Garage. Sympathy Weight marries smokey malt with sweet barrel to delicious results. Wee heavy is admittedly an outlier style for me but the kiss of maple bourbon sweetness is more than enough to pique my interest.
