absurd beer, bottle generously shared with me friday night, what a cool brew this is, monday night continues to impress me across a range of styles, but especially on the barrel aged and wild side of things. this is a big blended beer, bourbon barrel milk stout with maple barrel imperial brown, sick! they then take it further by adding what must be a boatload of coffee, as well as caramelized walnuts, cocoa nibs, and vanilla. its adjunct forward, super complex, and quite sweet, a real treat to share and sip on slowly, it warms up extremely well and never really gives up its alcohol strength. very dark brown but not black, quite viscous, but also pretty well carbonated for what it is. the bourbon is strong in the nose and taste, which really bring up the vanilla, caramel is evident too, milk sugar is there, the long boiled nature of this is on display, rich and almost barleywine-esque in the middle with toffee and brown sugar notes, and of course the maple, which is not lost to the other elements. the brown ale part plays well with the chocolate character the nibs bring, and there are little fusions and synergies all through this, no two sips taste the same to me, which is incredible. lots of barrel, some char, and some of the darker grain from the stout thread as this warms, plenty of nuttiness too, not sure i can call it walnut specifically, but maybe, its oily and even kind of fatty from them, candied sweetness too. the coffee is dominant on the back end and also in the nose, bitter and darkly roasted but not acidic or harsh, very well incorporated, yet it is the very last thing i taste in a really layered beer. this is desserty and rich but its not over the top, its not boozy for what it is, and i think there is a really high degree of authenticity here, like i have no doubt real nuts and good vanilla were used, i love the maple wrinkle in it, and i think the base beer being a blend of different styles is way cool. great use of the nuts. stellar and original beer overall, these guys are blowing my mind just about every time i have their beer!
