A roasty Scotch ale with a hint of smoke. Full-bodied, but not overpowering. Smokey, but not in a creepy bar kind of way. Sweet, but not obnoxiously so. Sound like your ideal mother-in-law? Fair enough, but it also is a pretty dead-on description of our Scotch Ale. In a difficult hop-growing climate, Scottish brewers relied on other ingredients to impart flavor and bitterness – one such ingredient was smoked malt. Drafty Kilt is a dark, malty bombshell of a beer.

My brother brought me a 6 pack of different beers from this brewery when he came home to Cleveland to visit from Atlanta . Thanks Mark! Poured out of a 12 oz. bottle into one of my tulip glasses, this beer pours a very dark, clear, amber/copper color with deep ruby highlights when held up to the light with lots of streams of little bubbles slowly but continuously and steadily rising to the beer's surface. Has a nice, slightly tan, fluffy white head over an inch thick when first poured with good retention. The head was not even when poured, meaning there were certain sections of foam that lumped up in mounds and little craters in the foam. Good lacing. Aromas of smoked caramel malt sweetness along with a mossy peat aspect followed by fruit notes of plum, dates, and raisins, along with molasses. The taste is pretty much the same, with roasted caramel malt sweetness accompanied by some peat moss that gives way to the aforementioned fruit notes of plums, raisins and dates along with some molasses. Has a bit more bitterness to it than I'd have expected from a beer of this style. This may actually be the hoppiest beer of this style I have ever had. Damn tasty indeed, and all the flavors really balance each other nicely. Has a smooth, creamy, frothy, yet somewhat grainy, gritty, minerally, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Has a clean and fairly dry after taste. A good beer all around and an interesting take on this style.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of mild malts. Taste is malts, smoke, a mild hop presence. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Look: Poured a rich mahogany color with a robust head that was 1 inch tall an off-white. Head melted to a thin cloud of Froth with a sticky ring a foam lace on the glass.
Smell and Taste: As in the description smoky malts are dominant. Slightly sweet upfront and somewhat dry on the finish.
Feel: Leaning toward thick and oily but only slightly.
Overall: Drafty Kilt is an excellent wee heavy scotch ale. More than happy to down one anytime for any occasion.

Scotch ales are one of my favorite styles, and I'm glad I came across this one...
Another offering out of my latest GA trip. Great looking, dark beer, with a very enticing smell of sweet maltiness. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied, very lightly carbonated - all of it leading to a full-mouthed, malty taste of roast and smoke (as advertised.) Overall, it was good, not the best scotch ale I've had, but still good.
