Poured from a Jack's Abby growler into a pint glass. Jack's Abby Trail Mix is Smoke and Dagger aged for 1 month in a bourbon barrel with cranberry, ginger, pistachio, cherrywood smoked malt, chocolate, coffee and hot pepper.
A: Pours a straight chocolate brown with about 2 fingers of light tan colored foam. The head quickly dissipates into a rim of suds with a considerable amount of lacing as the contents of my glass dwindle.
S: The aroma of sweet bourbon hits my nose first. A scent of pistachio and chocolate swiftly follow. A slight smell of coffee and hot pepper is picked up as well.
T: Upon first taste, a bourbon pistachio flavor comes through immediately. Chocolate follows with coffee and a tiny bit of spice from the hot pepper coming through for the finish. The taste follows the nose but is more intense than the smell.
M: A medium bodied brew. Doesn't dry out my mouth as much as some other barrel aged brews do. This is definitely due to the lager yeast used in here.
Overall: Jack's Abby did a great job on this brew. This will most definitely be the only time I'll ever have this again. That's quite a bittersweet feeling. However, I am enjoying this immensely. If you can get your hands on this you won't be sorry. Such an interesting beer with many elements. I wish they'd bottle this one and send it only to me.
