Local Pittsburgh musician, Byron Nash, and Helltown Brewing, an independent craft brewery with locations in Mt. Pleasant, PA and Export, PA reintroduce BLQ Metal, a west coast style IPA, golden-straw in color, hopped with Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, and Galaxy. Bitterness is present but not aggressive, light bodied with a semi-dry finish. Aroma is citrus fruit with some piney/grass that carries through the flavor with a little earthiness in the finish . . . an old school IPA with the bitterness dialed back just a bit.

Just had the year five of this beer very herbal hoppy and aggressive with sharp grass and citrus hop zest. Kind of difficult to finish very west coast IPA. Not sure I would get it again but cool cover art.

I ALMOST blew it! I stopped in at Rieker Bottle Works on a post-work errand & picked up a Crowler/CAN of this one, put it in my backpack, pedaled home on my bike & promptly went to bed. I was at work last night when I suddenly remembered its presence! Fortunately, it was on the floor & I keep my house rather cool so it lived until I got home and then cooled it in the reefer briefly while I took a nap & ran some more errands. Now, I am ready to go!
From the Crowler/CAN: "12/05".
I Crack!ed open the oversized vent on this oversized CAN & beCAN a steady C-Line Glug designed to minimize any dripping. I was not only successful in avoiding drips, but I also got a finger-plus of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with excellent retention, leaving a load of lacing in its wake. Color was a gorgeous 24-carat solid Gold (SRM = 5) with NE-quality clarity, calling forth The Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon & Croesus, all CANmoring for a taste. The nose was a turn-of-the-century throwback with loads of pine, some grapefruit, some grassiness & a light malty sweetness. 8=O Mouthfeel was medium, about on-par for the style. The taste was not as intense as the nose had led me to expect, but the brewery wanted to dial back on the bitterness so it was not totally surprising. It remained very piney-minty with hints of grapefruit citrusiness, just like the sorts of beers that really opened my eyes to beCANming an unapologetic hophead. Mmm. Finish was dry, but not gaspingly so, with enough bitterness to keep me happy without being over the top. What a lucky find! YMMV.
