Nexus Brewery, a delightful find, has masterfully crafted a one-of-a-kind American IPA, the New Mexico Snow Storm. As I pour it into a belcher glass, I'm immediately captivated by the sight of a frothy, airy, two-fingered white head. Above-average retention leaves a stunning lacing on the glass. The amber-yellow beer with light golden hues (SRM 4) boasts a slight cloudiness and lively carbonation bubbles. The overall appearance of this style is above average, setting the stage for a new experience.
As I bring the glass to my nose, I smell grapefruit, orange peel, resin, and a bit of floral; the hops are fragrant and fresh. Nosing the glass again, the malt profile is crackers and biscuits with a subtle toasted bread crust. Other aromas I smell are malt sweetness, grassy, and slight earthiness. The aromas smell delicious.
Regrettably, the flavors don't quite live up to the promising aromas. The hop profile is not as robust as the aromas suggest. I detect notes of orange peels, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, stone fruit, floral blossoms, and a light herbal touch. The malt profile is bready with crackers. The other flavors I taste are light phenol, grassy, and earthy.
The mouthfeel is astringent, and the slightly tannic finish is refreshingly crisp and dry. The body is medium and has medium carbonation.
When I sipped the glass, I was excited to try this beer. The fragrant aroma made my mouth salivate. My first sip set in, and the aromas overshadowed the taste. The hop profile became muddled on the palate. The malt backbone was not as firm either. However, I did enjoy sipping on it this evening.
