Pours an opaque super dark orange-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, dark fruit, port wine, earth, and slight funk aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, raisin, earth, toast, and slight funk flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast and earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with nice traditional old ale characteristics, but there is a very subtle funk quality in both the smell and taste that is a bit odd.

Pours dark brown with a small head.
Nose shows sweet malt by the truckload, lots of prune and raisin notes.
Similar flavours very malty with sweet bready and toasty notes along with raisin characters.

Had on tap @ The Canyon in Folsom, CA on 01/16/15
Appearance - Served up in a 12oz snifter, this brew displays a beautiful deep garnett color and a finger's width of khaki head. Decent retention, then gives way to a thin, broken layer of surface suds.
Smell - Huge notes of caramel with hints of chocolate and a vague metallic character.
Taste - Distinct caramel flavor with light hints of coconut and chocolate. The finish adds a faintly tart berry fruitiness.
Mouthfeel - Near full in body with light carbonation. Somewhat watery finish.
Overall - Good, solid brew, but not elite. Seems a tad watery, especially the finish.

On tap at the Pinglehead Brewing Company. .
Opaque with ruby colored edges and highlights.
Flavor is a touch medicinal, as is common for style. Sweet, boozy (in a good way) aroma. Full, smooth body.

Along with Barleywine and their red ale - this is my favorite Mad.
Tasted in 10 strong flight at the brewer.
A: Murky brown with ruby highlights. A chunky tan head with very nice retention.
S: Powerful and inviting: Raisin, malt, syrup.
T: Taste follows nose. Opens sweet then fades into a long dryness that is pleasant and balanced.
F: Best mouth feel - body, chewy, satifying, great finish.
Must try. As good as any other Old Ale.

Burnt mahogany hue with a wispy two finger head not much lacing, aroma has heaps going on from tobacco to port to red wine, feel is medium bodied slight carbonation, tastes are tobacco, prunes, raisin toast, dried figs and finished like a fine port, overall not a bad old ale needs barrels though cheers.
