$ 7.49 (Including shipping)/12 oz bottle ($ 0.624 /oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 5/20/19.
Undated. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Dark brown, barely translucent.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), dark tan, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a five to six mm crown and thin, complete cap.
Lacing – Fair. Wide partial ring of tiny bubbles with a few large holes.
Aroma – 4 - Predominantly roasted malt with some bourbon and chocolate.
Flavor – 3.25 - Initially some chocolate malt. After the first swallow all I can taste is the bitterness. Ends with marked malt bitterness which overpowers any flavor. No alcohol (9.5% ABV), no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl. As the temperature approaches 61 degrees, the bitterness seems to melt away and chocolate predominates. Still, neither bourbon nor barrel put in an appearance.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 3 (-0.25 point for being undated.) Bitterer than most IPAs and less flavorful than any stouts I’ve had in recent memory. Too bad the flavor doesn’t improve until the last swallow.
