Hazy Days by Rumspringa Brewing Company is somewhat of a cross between an American Wheat and an IPA. I've gotten a little out of the beer loop for a few years unfortunately, and during that time IPAs have really gained some traction in the U.S. of A. in terms of popularity. Because I've missed out on the boom I'm pretty much a novice at the IPA style. I purchased this beer at the brewery itself, which also offers some good wines. The guy behind the bar said this was one of his favorites that they brewed, so I decided to give it a try.
Hazy Days pours a hazy, deep gold color with somewhat of a brownish hue to it. A finger of foam forms and lasts for about 45 seconds. The smell is indeed a bit hoppy, bringing to mind grapefruit. A sweet and almost refreshing aroma to be sure. The mouthfeel is decent but average. Normal amount of carbonation present. Upon first sip, the hoppiness is indeed the dominant flavor, but really was not overpowering. Almost like a sweet juicy grapefruit, but very little bitterness. There were some bready flavors underneath. The label says the beer is juicy and I can definitely agree with that. There is a little bit of citrus and perhaps some apple and grains in the aftertaste, and no alcoholic warmth in the end.
This is certainly an easy drinking beer. I have a feeling that for true IPA aficionados, they may be left wanting more but for me this was a pleasant and easy to drink brew. Also, the brewery/winery itself is a pretty cool place and worth checking out. I'm definitely interested in trying more of their brews next time I'm in the area.
