I am sitting here in the tap room as I review! Served in a pint glass, pours a dark almost black ruby color. Smell like roast coffee and malt. Light beige long lasting head, more than ample lacing on the glass. Full bodied and bold. Best porter I’ve had in years!

Served in a pint glass
A - Pours black, with very little lacing. Brownish head on top.
S - Smells a little like a bourbon. Not getting much of the smokey smell from it, and very little of the caramel-like porter.
T - Fantastic. The smoked flavor is very much present throughout. It is balanced enough by the malty flavor to keep it honest. I found this a very tasty porter.
M - Solid; not much carbonation and medium bodied. Doesn't overwhelm the palate. While this is a german brewhaus, I could see this go very well with cajin food (I love Blackened Voodoo with cajun, and this would be so much better).
D - If in the mood I could drink a few of these. A drinkable beer, but the style doesn't lend itself to be the best drinker.
Overall a solid job by the Brewhaus

On tap at the Brew Haus...served in a standard pint glass.
The beer arrived with a small khaki head which dissipated rather quickly...very little lace left behind. The body is black...super dark for a porter (or maybe it is the din lighting in here)...
The nose has a bunch of roasted malts and smoke...cured meat smoke, not campfire smoke. Some coffee notes are present in the background.
Smoke hits your tongue first and pretty much lasts throughout the tasting. Peat, coffee, and hints of chocolate round out the flavors.
The mouth feel is a little thin, but still slick. Moderate carbonation.
Pretty nice offering here! The smoke flavor is well balanced and not overwhelming like some.

Reviewed on 2/22/2010. On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of smoked and roasted malt (not very meaty though). Flavor of smoke, sweet malt, charred malt. Pretty good smoked beer, easy drinking. It grew on me as I continued to drink and I was really enjoying it by the end of the glass.

Pours a very dark brown color with a very small tight tan head that settled into light ring. The aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate, wet bark and smoke, which is in nice balance with the other aromas. Traditional porter flavor, with roasted malt and some chocolate. This is followed up by a lovely wet burnt wood, smoke, and light roasted meat flavors. There is a light lemon flavor towards the end that creates an astringent characteristic. The feel is rather light, which I don't necessarily mind. Usually smoked porters have a heavier body but the malt supports the smoke flavor and the lighter body adds to the drinkability. The carbonation is soft; finishes with a roastd malt bitterness. This is a very good smoked porter. I like the lighter body and the 6.5%ABV. Good beer to drink on this freezing day.

Fresh growler fill from the tap at Black Forest Brew Haus on 1/16/10 served in a standard pint glass.
Black brew with a tan head that stayed around as a ring and left a few spots of lacing.
The aroma is full of roasty malt, chocolate and brown sugar.
The taste is wonderfully roasty and smokey with some chocolate/brown sugar sweetness and a little bitterness before a smokey finish.
Medium bodied with mild carbonation.
Very easy drinking, tasty brew.

Poured a deep black hue with a finger and a half creamy tan head. There was good retention and sticky lacing.
The smell featured a sweet smoke and burnt grain.
The taste consisted of sweet malts, peaty smoke and dry coffee.
Some dark fruit detected as well.
The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.
Overall a very tasty and complex porter.
