unimpressed with this new one from odell. it just doesnt have much too it. it looks nothing like a saison, copper colored and crystal clear, an odd appearance for the style for sure. it smells alright, white wine type french saison yeast and mild spice from it as well, minimal fruit sweetness, quite a bit of orange peel and bitter zest and pith. the taste is thankfully quite minimal on the blood orange. it seems every brewery in the country is using blood orange lately, and so many of them go way over the top. its nice to have something in moderation, although the rest of whats happening isnt too impressive. the yeast is french saison type, seemingly right out of the vial, generic and samey and uninspired. the malt is big, especially with the fruit, some weight happening here, and not a lot of layers. heavy in the belly too, and not as dry or funky as it could be. lots of areas to improve with this one, but the fruited stuff from odell has never been all that great in my experience. better as a pale than a saison i think, i need more wheat malt flavor and more of an interesting yeast to get close. tasty but off style, they can do better with this, im sure of it...
