12oz bottled 2020, opened 2-26-21.
1+ finger khaki head with a frothy chocolate milk top. Very good retention.
Black with brown edges in half-ass lighting. Sheet of lacing to begin as the head slowly recedes.
Definitely getting the chocolate and coconut elements but neither is overpowering or artificial. Brown sugar and roasted malt. Café au lait. Flavors closely follow the nose.
Smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Appropriate carbonation. Roasty, medium length and semi-sweet finish.
Drinkability is high at 11%, be careful.
Outstanding.

January 2021, I dig it doing some reviews from this year.
Pours black, brown head, 3/5" good retention especially for a barrel aged product with oily coconut in it. O'Dell's has been making great beer since at least the 90s, so this isn't too much of a surprise to bArF. Aroma has all the advertised parts, bourbon barrel, oak, chocolate, coconut, all in harmony, nothing too heavy handed or light.
Taste is enjoyable, again, all the parts pushing their weight around and they're all in the same weight class. I kind of want to blend the coffee version with this and try and take it to such great heights. Would be very nice, very evil. A good amount of coconut beers fail to get the coconut across, but this one succeeds in putting coconut in your mouf. Does a great job at making 11% pretty easy to drink. I tend to prefer barrel aging being 1 year or less and this tastes as such.
I dig that 4 packs of this are like $15, while other breweries are charging $2/oz for their barrel aged product.

Barreled Treasure Coconut Chocolate Stout from Odell Brewing. Purchased on 17/5/21 from Spec’s on DeZavala. On room temperature shelf at store. $ 6.68 (including tax)/12 oz bottle ($0.557/oz) stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 19/5/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Unreadable “BOTTLED” date. Served at 51.2 degrees in a hand washed and dried glass coffee cup. Final temperature 57.3 degrees.
Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), hazy.
Body – Deep Brown (SRM 18), murky and opaque. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.5 cm, aggressive center pour), fawn, high density, average retention, diminishing to a one to two mm crown and a thin complete rocky cap.
Lacing – Good. High density sheet of bubbles covers the entire inside of the glass with an occasional window. This eventually breaks into torn curtains.
Aroma – 3.5 – Weak coconut like a gutted shell. No hops, malt, chocolate, or yeast.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins moderately bitter with some chocolate malt flavor, no hops, no yeast. Some coconut shows up as an afterthought. No ethanol (11 % ABV, marked on container) taste or aroma. Gastric warming begins slowly and remains marginally noticeable. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends slightly sour.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, creamy, soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Very average Impy stout, except for the lacing and the well-hidden ABV. As the end of the glass approaches, the flavor shifts to a bit of wood but the bourbon remains elusive. OK but not anything I will seek.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 2 fingers of tan head. Average head retention & lacing
S: Cola, hint of Bourbon & iron
T: Follows the nose, barrel dryness, molasses & a little toasted coconut up front. Dryness. coconut & cocoa all increase as this warms. Finishes with cocoa, a little coconut & molasses & a whisper of Bourbon
MF: Medium body, fairly subtle carbonation
Pretty easy to drink, but had much higher hopes for this one, barrel needs more presence

Another winner by Odell. These guys know what they are doing. A strong beer but with noticeable chocolate and bourbon. Nice...

Flavors of coconut and chocolate are there in smell and taste. All of the flavors are there but do not overtake each other. The barrel taste slightly present but not overpowering.

12 oz. Bottle
Bottled: 2020
Poured into a Tree House glass a very nice dark brown/black color, with some pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger tan head, which also leaves a very nice medium size island, and also leaves some minimal sticky lacing behind. The nose is pretty nice, malty, hoppy, with a very nice touch of chocolate/toffee, vanilla, coconut, licorice, bourbon/oak notes. The taste is very nice, malty, hoppy, with a very nice touch of chocolate/toffee, with a really nice touch of vanilla, licorice, coconut, very nice bourbon/oak notes. Full Body, ABV is hidden very nicely, with a slight dry/bitter finish, a very nice sipper. Overall, this is a very tasty brew. Glad to see it around here.

Initial impression of a bottle from a 4-pack (2020 vintage):
The coconut fucking sings and the chocolate malt sweetness follows in neat harmony with dark malts and a subdued barrel sweetness. The bourbon barrel unfortunately brings little vanilla where much would be welcome, and I find any barrel character beyond that to be disappointingly reticent (particularly in the case of the virgin oak, which imbues the beer with zero rich white oak/toasted woodsy flavour).
Borders on silky in its softness. Full-bodied, smooth, wet, creamy. Not too heavy or overbearing and there's no booziness to it.
I don't regard it as a top tier barrel aged imperial stout given how relatively little the barrel flavours actually come through, but it's another solid imperial stout from Odell that affirms the brewery's place amongst Colorado's finest breweries. Well worth picking up a 4 pack of, and a very enjoyable coconut-driven brew.

12/14/20 bottle:
"Barrel aged imperial stout with coconut & chocolate"..."aged in a blend of bourbon, wheat whiskey and American oak barrels and enlivened with luxurious additions of coconut and dark chocolate."
HEAD: Rich, robust, long-lasting. ~10 minute head retention.
BODY: Opaque jet black.
Looks as it should. A solid appearance for an imperial stout.
AROMA: Magnificently expressive toasted coconut, dark chocolate, gorgeous roast, bourbon barrel vanillin, rich white oak, vanilla bean shavings, a perfectly calibrated level of dark malt sweetness, specialty chocolate malt.
Suggests a perfectly balanced imperial stout with a well executed yet subtle bourbon barrel presence and an impeccable incorporation of vivid genuine coconut. I can't wait to try it.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Silky soft with a hint of coarseness that emerges around the beer's climax coaxing out a bit more of its roasty flavour before finishing soft and silky yet again. Smooth, wet, full-bodied but approachable. Perfectly carbonated.
Not too sweet or chocolatey, with enough roasted barley and coffee-like bitterness/roast to counter its dialed-in sweetness. Subtle surfacing flavours of vivid coconut and vanilla bean/bourbon-derived vanillin burst on the palate with no trace of the artificiality so common in the additive-laden pastry stouts crowding the market these days.
Can't say I taste any wheat whiskey, but the bourbon and oak barrel flavours are obvious albeit subtle and well integrated. It softness teases out the best of the vanilla, and while I doubt actual vanilla bean was used I can't be sure...if all this beer's vanilla character is from bourbon then it's damned impressive; this evokes vanilla more than many vanilla stouts I've tried.
Balance is basically perfect. Not a chore to drink at all despite its substantial ABV...in fact I find myself ready to crack another bottle just off how great it is sip to sip.
I find no overt hop flavours (true to style) or off-flavours.
OVERALL: I don't see any other way to slice it except to say it's a fucking great imperial stout with a terrific coconut flavour that bests most attempts at the style. Odell is one of Colorado's best breweries - and probably our best widely distributed brewery - and this beer is amongst their finest offerings in my book. A must-try for the imperial stout fan and a treat of a brew to be sure.
