I first sampled this beer at the Maine brewers fest back in November od 03. At the time I thought it was the best tasting beer there. However, I readily admit that my mouth may have been a little numbed by the time I tasted it. I wanted to get an unadultarated tatsing before coming to conclusions.
On tap at the GLB. Pours a slightly hazy light amber/gold, with a smallish light eggshell colored head. Smells just a wee bit fruity with a bit of alcohol coming through in the background.
The initial taste is outstanding. Lots of big fruity flavors coming through. Grape, cherry, and a little bit spicy. Then it turns quite sweet, almost syrupy, in to a little bit of apple cider consistency. Lastly, there is a very abrupt transition to a big mouthful of alcohol with some very minor hop notes. Huge beer. Lots of alcohol. One or two will put it on you. Even my hardcore drinking buddies were feeling this one. At $2 a pint this is dangerous stuff.
The problem with this beer is that the taste doesn't really flow. Each characteristic that I described had it's merits, but it tasted very disjointed and the flavors didn't transition well from one to the next. With a bit of tweaking this could be an incredible brew.

Small head; Sweet flavor at the start followed by a tart foundation and yeast hints as a back drop moving on to a certain bitterness punctuated at the finish by a sweep of alcohol.
Overall this beer seems to be rather thin flavor profile.
All of the Belgian Strong Ale "pretenders" need to sample their flavor standards.
I'm not entirely certain what else to comment about-- it has some of the characteristics of a strong ale, but much seems to be missing--
Keep up the good work and add to...
