We scrapped all of the traditional recipes, drank a few beers, and completely lost ourselves in deep conversation about the perfect IPA - the one we could drink all the time. We stripped down our preconceived notions of how an IPA is typically crafted and instead built a recipe that would be the ultimate showcase of the most expressive hops available to brewers today. We were lost...and now we are in love.

OK, I'm a total hophead. This beer just hits the perfect beer spot for me! It is fresh, piney, citrusy, with a light malt backbone, that just rings all my bells. I seem to love just about anything made with Mosaic, but the Burley guys knocked this out of the park. One of the best beers I've ever had. I'm a great Lagunitas Sucks fan, and this one ups that! Just try it!

A drinking experience that begins by emptying the entire contents of two twelve ounce cans into a clear glass liter mug. It's a tight fit, as there's a little more than ideal white foam produced, although it recedes rather quickly. The color of the liquid is common golden-amber, slightly dull and opaque. The aroma is mostly cleanly sharp piney hops, with little else. Often, what you smell is what you taste. All the taste offered here is a mildly piney/resinous hop bite. There's almost no appreciable starch backbone for counterbalance, let alone a nice malty compliment. That lacking carries over to the body, as for an IPA, even a modern American version, this drinks thinly. Its scant glass lacing offers proof to that. Overall, because it's very light across the tongue and does a decent job at disguising its ABV, it's drinkable. But, it's also characterless, minus a moderate piney bite that can easily be gotten from better rounded brews.

Cloudy, yellow/gold appearance with a large white head and decent lacing. Late developing aroma playing up the citrus and tropical fruit aspects. Hops still holding strong in the taste but the grains are contributing their fair share. Fruity aftertaste. Medium bodied mouthfeel with good carbonation.

Burley Oak Brewing Co. "Lost IPA"
12 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
Notes via stream of consciousness: A very hazy golden-amber body with a bit of an orange sheen is capped by a massive head of rocky white foam. The aroma is fruity, resinous, yeasty, and just a touch odd. There's a lot of carbonation to it and I wonder how old this sample is. The flavor is fruity with orange and berries, and some peach, aprciot, and bubblegum. The odd note remains; it's mild but it seems phenolic. There's some oat flavor to the malt but it also seems a hint caramelish, which can sometimes be a sign of oxidation, and I wonder if this is an old can. It's not that bitter, and the balance is good so no problems there. It's medium bodied and crisp with a very fine-bubbled, zesty carbonation. I'm going to have to try to find another one of these and re-review it but who knows, maybe this is the way it's supposed to be.

Having a pint on tap, pours up murky/hazy tan, the head dissipates quickly and leaves some scanty lacing.
Grapefruit is dominant among the citrus flavors. Pine and grassy notes are light, maltiness is pleasant with a dry finish. Not overly hopped, but pretty well done. A refreshing IPA to drink in this warm weather.
