341ml bottle, the guest star in the current Phillips Showcase mixed pack - kitschy retro parody of the Mars Attacks! aliens on the label, for a brew that seems just a tad out of season, eh?
This beer pours a clear, bright medium bronzed amber colour, with two pudgy fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and lazily creamy off-white head, which leaves some decent island grotto profile lace around the glass as things slowly blow off.
It smells of bready, biscuity caramel malt, a twinge of warm toffee, subtle red apple and muddled citrus fruity notes, and prominent leafy, earthy, and somewhat spicy grassy hops. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy caramel malt, biscuity and crackery toffee, indistinct, but welcome dry fruit, and more peppy earthy, herbal, and grassy hop bitters.
The carbonation is good and testy in its challenging and supportive frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, with a small airy creaminess arising as things move away from fridge temperatures. It finishes off-dry, the robust malt settling in for either a dirndl-chasing bender, or maybe to fight those lingering hops that have suddenly turned into laser pistol wielding little green men.
Overall, a rather true to form version of style, the malt large and in charge, but in a nicely leavened biscuity and edgy manner, with a hoppiness that could not be more complementary. Perhaps I'm getting some ESB vibes here, but hey, doesn't matter, I would drink this until I could no longer pick off those creepy invading freaks from my rooftop (meaning I've just plum fallen off).
