Oatmeal Stout

Nutty, tried from 650 ml, recommended.

Tasting notes: Big nutty oatmeal and coffee flavors right out of the gate. Quickly mellows out to reveal further box of chocolates and cherry complexity. Nil ashy flavor. Minimal dark fruit. Incredibly long, lingering finish ... Wow. Full of oat cereal and mocha character. Quite dry but smooth and creamy. Not sure how it happened, but this is a phenomenal stout that ranges away from more typically Phillips climes. Gorgeous finish, I tell ya.

341ml bottle, another refugee from the 2014 Phillips Snowcase, brought back out of retirement, apparently.

This beer pours a solid, oily black, with subtle basal highlights, and one fat finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat bubbly tan head, which leaves some decent arched coral reef lace around the glass as things slowly subside.

It smells of bready, grainy, and slightly roasted caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa, dry coffee grounds, a mild earthy sourness, and some leafy, weedy hops. The taste is rather chocolatey right off the bat, with subsequent bready caramel, a twinge of biscuity toffee, tart dark fruit notes, cream-laced coffee, and a plain earthy, weedy bitterness.

The carbonation is pretty low-key, barely a fizzy burble to be had, the body a sturdy medium-full weight, and fairly smooth and creamy - the oats, they be representin'! It finishes a bit on the sweet side, the chocolate and milky character getting the upper hand.

An agreeable version of the style, the guest grains really pulling their weight, and more than enough flavours battling it out for acreage on my palate. They would do well to make this part of their regular stable once again.

 

Bomber courtesy of CBA. Pours out good and dark with a large head. Nose- vegetal sourness and some coffee grinds. Taste- muted coffee and milk chocolate with a lactic sourness that finishes into something like burnt plastic. Medium bodied with above average carnonation. Cooked vegetables in the finish along with the plastic taste.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a nice dark brown foamy head with some good retention and some nice lacing notes. Aroma of deep black chocolate notes with some dry roasted malt notes as well. Notes of light coffee were also discernable. Body was about average with some good carbonation. Well done and well balance overall.

Picked up a 650 ml bottle of this while recently in BC as I have not seen it in Alberta. From the label "Stick to your ribs breakfast nutrition. The beer that's rich, smooth and filling, just like Mom used to make!" Date clipped on the label, but not sure if that is the 'made on' or 'consume by'.
Very nice stout appearance. Black with ruby red highlights when held to the light. Thick brown head, dense enough to last fore the whole glass, thick sheets of lacing. The smell has lots of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. More of the same flavors in the taste, roasted grain, chocolate, coffee. A very tasty, rich beer.
Maybe a bit thinner (in flavor and mouthfeel) that St. Ambroise, but not enough to be negative. Pleasantly suprised by this one.

Pours still, deep, deep brown, with almost no head. Coffee, muted chocolate, with some light fruity character, and some roasty malt are the main contenders for the aromas. This one tastes like watery coffee, throw in some soft chocolate and mild nut flavours. Very thin, light bodied, watery finish. Pretty much below average in all respects. Thanks to Dr. Hyde for this one!

A: Black, touch of tan head, no retention, hint of leg.

S: Roasty, nuts, bread/biscuit, slightly floral aroma.

T: Light roastyness, hints of chocolate and bread, light grainyness. Flavour is a little thin.

M: Light body & carbonation; smooth & almost creamy; too thin.

D: Easy drinker but it's thin & watery... doesn't bring me back for more.

A - Dark, opaque brown. Head is puny and disappears quickly.

S - Dark soy sauce aroma with sesame oil. Hmm. Lots of fruitiness and toastiness. Metallic notes come on later.

T - Nuttiness is the most prominent flavour up front. A solid coffee flavour kicks in in the aftertaste. Not much in between.

M - A little thin for the style. We're not talking macro-thin, but certainly not up to stout standards.

D - I've had better, by a long ways. Lacks flavour and mouthfeel.

What's this? Phillips has actually made an excellent ale from the porter-stout family?

After being utterly disappointed by the Espresso Stout, and impressed by the flavour but still wanting something more in the chocolate porter, I am pleasantly surprised by the Oatmeal Stout. I had heard it was good, but approached it with mixed feelings.

Typical stout appearance. Black, with ruby when held to the light. Thin head, but it is not as dense as other oatmeal stouts that I've had, or nearly as dark.

The smell is bitter chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and a faint burst of dry oats. Nice, rich smell.

Slightly bitter, roasted barley taste. Dark chocolate, black coffee essences. Can't really taste the "oatmeal" but the stout part is there. Not creamy, or diactyl-ized like Samuel Smith's, and not quite as intense as McAuslan's. More varied and multi-dimensional than Swan's, another Victoria done Oatmeal stout. A very tasty, rich beer.

The mouthfeel could still use a bit of work. Far superior to Longboat Porter and especially to the Espresso Stout, but it still comes off as a bit thin.

All in all, I'm very impressed and quite pleased by this. I hope to be buying more very soon. As a side note, that label with its smiling quaker looks awfully similar to something else to do with oatmeal....
