From the front label: "2020"
Appearance: The body is black, and even with a vigorous pour it only forms a short and brief film of foam that is a light tan color. A hair-thin ring surrounds the glass with no lacing to be seen.
Aroma: Barrel character leaps out of the glass as soon as the beer is poured. The room takes on this woody character as the aroma leaps from the glass. Closer inspection reveals a strong chocolate scent, worcester sauce, Big Red cinnamon gum, and a sweet rum-like aroma.
Taste: Up front there is chocolate, some vanilla, caramel, and toffee. Towards the middle the toffee and vanilla flavors come though a lot more. There is a light cocoa character with a pleasant hint of wood and a bit of chalk towards the end. The aftertaste is similar to the taste of Big Red gum. The highlight is the toffee and vanilla character.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth. Easy to drink and enjoyable. Low and mellow bitterness.
Overall: The aromas in the beer are pretty good but they seem disjointed. The flavors are fortunately much better, and the toffee with vanilla character makes it very enjoyable. The body felt a bit thin, but at an advertised "ALCHOHOL 12.3% BY VOL" it is a reasonable tradeoff. The beer is worth picking up if you can find it easily. I could drink it again.
