On the slope of the shoulder of the stubby bottle there is a date code: "PKGD 11/29/22 10.38.21"
This beer is part of the 2022 GBS Complete Set.
Appearance: The body is black and it has a short fluffy off-white head that drops out quickly leaving no lacing. Only mild retention on the edge of the glass where a ring stands but no real head.
Aroma: There is a bit of cinnamon that comes through along with some light alcohol scent. There is a bit of a raisin aroma to the beer but it pops in then pops right back out. The aroma as a whole is very light.
Taste: Up front there are notes of raisin and prune. It takes on a bit of a brandy flavor towards the middle of the palate and there are notes of brown bread. It tastes a bit like Jamaican Rum Cake.
Mouthfeel: It is medium-full bodied and there is this cooked bread bitterness. The beer is a sipper. Alcohol is definitely apparent in the beer which is to be expected given the label advertising "ALCOHOL 10.5% BY VOL."
Overall: The appearance is standard and the aroma is pretty lackluster, but the beer definitely has a lot of flavor and that is mostly what counts. The label has a rather lengthy description that partially states:
"Our friends at A. Smith Bowman's Distillery in Fredericksburg gave us some port barrels that they had finished a run of bourbon in. We took those and filled them with gingerbread stout. We artfully blended those barrels with 11-month Bourbon barrel-aged Belgian Quadrupel to create a decadent final liquid treat. The barrel blended beer was finished on dates and cherries, with a final touch of citron."
Most of these advertised flavors don't come through in the way that they are stated, however the final product is very nice. As a whole the beer tastes a lot like a Jamaican Rum Cake that has been been soaked in port wine, brandy, and bourbon (minus the rum). I could drink it again but it would be something that I would enjoy occasionally. I would recommend it on the whole but it might not blow your socks off.
