On tap at Pour Taproom in Asheville. This is an incredible beer. Not too overpowering with the bourbon or alcohol, but incredible taste. I would put this up against any other barrel aged beer that I have had. Without a doubt, INCREDIBLE

Appearance: pours a deep brown almost black. small tan head. Good retention. Low lacing but big brown alcohol legs.

Smell: strong alcohol and whiskey. Chocolate and dark fruit.

Taste: starts with strong whiskey. Some dark fruits and molasses come through. Strong chocolate. Alcohol. roastiness is fairly low.

This monster was served on tap at Holiday Market’s 60th Anniversary shindig at the Farmer’s Market in Royal Oak, Michigan. It was served in a standard wide-mouthed tasting glass, showing a murky oily black coloring. It held a fleeting quarter finger tall head of medium brown foam that quickly fizzed away, leaving little head to speak of. No sediment or haze was noted, and carbonation appeared to be on the mild side. The nose was intense and glorious, giving notes of freshly pressed vanilla bean, crisply burnt cannoli, heavy bourbon and oak woodiness, massive boozy burn, pleasant buttery diacetyls and light banana esters, rye and chocolate malt base, dusty gravel, cooling aluminum, curious candy cane mintiness, dark caramel sugar, pineapple, and Hawaiian punch fruitiness. The flavoring followed like a punch to the palate, offering highly boozy and fumy rye whiskey, butterscotch caramel sweetness, roasted brown, black, coffee, and chocolate maltiness, brown sugars, vinegar acidity, big oak barreling, moldy wheat breadiness, staunch buttery diacetyls, black pepper, sticky and melty cocoa nibs, and charred marshmallows. The body was thick and chewy, but as smooth as velvet, with the mouth left fully coated, and the rest of your body warmed to the level of your gut. Slurp and smack were sticky, with lesser cream and froth to follow. The abv was appropriate, and although this is more your sipper type beer, it disappeared in a flash.

Overall, this was the standout offering from a night of fantastic beers. As a direct comparison, this was consumed side-by-side with Founders KBS. While we’ve had the pleasure of being able to enjoy KBS numerous times in the past, we’ve never had a chance to try it on tap. That said, the Bulleit Bourbon Barrel Aged Ten FIDY took the cake, and was the one we kept coming back for. The whiskey was much, much harsher, but this lent an incredibly bright flavoring to an already fantastic product. The final blend was thus much smoother, despite that initial smack. Looking at the base beer of Ten FIDY, the butteriness of the diacetyls and the savory warmth of the wood gave purpose of meaning to that grain. We drank this all night, and even got creative in being able to make some beer floats with some local ice cream. Extremely memorable night, and unforgettable beer.

Had on tap. This might be my favorite beer of 2014. It is basically perfect. The body is viscous, warm, and thick, with unrelenting waves of syrupy texture followed by decent froth and breadiness. The smell is wonderfully balanced, with the slight rye characteristic of bulleit bourbon really bringing a great accent to the dark flavors of ten fidy while also brining out the base beer aromas. The taste is so rich, deep and complex. Dark chocolate, smoke, rye, barley, vanilla, caramel, maple, raisin, oak, molasses and bourbon all star and accent simultaneously. Amazing beer
