old chub in sherry barrels, a match made in heaven conceptually, the richness of both, just a little acid, oak, tang, its all here too, well crafted and delicious, and i often forget how good straight up old chub is, one of our states classics. this one seems lighter in color than i remember it, more amber than brown, almost diluted looking in some ways, save its haziness. the nose is all sherry, or mostly sherry, the rich malty base is lightened by the sherry, which seems fruity this time around, and there is a ton of wood. the flavor too is predominantly sherry, but the earthy base and the slight smoke presence, long with dried fruit notes in the base beer come to the fore in the finish. i might go ahead and say this has a little more sherry character than it needs to, its dominant not an accent, but the marriage of these two distinct beverages is extremely well done. i like all the barrel aged variants these guys do, and this is one of the more clever ones. too bad this will never be packaged, its really fantastic.
