I am CANtinuing to celebrate #IPADay2017, albeit a day later. I had to work my seCANd shift job yesterday, which only gave me the stamina to take on one DIPA before departure. I promise to make up for lost time today as I sit around and CANtemplate my future, especially as The CANQuest (tm) is CANcerned.
From the CAN: "CollaBREWation"; "Pack It In, Pack It Out".
I am really digging getting back into CANs, especially with the auditory nature of the Crack! I followed this up with an inverted Glug & sat back & watched as a pseudo-cascade took place, eventually forming just under three fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with mahogany highlights, belying the name, but so be it. Nose smelled roasty, chocolatey & minty, evocative of a York Peppermint Patty. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was lighter on the charcoal roastiness than others that I have drank & reviewed, but it was still outstripping the minty hoppiness that I live for in an IPA. Finish was bitter, moderately roasty & dry. That said, it just was not doing it for me.

Black in color with a faint bit of light still seeping through. There's a massively dense and creamy 2 inch head on top. Heavy lacing. The aroma is primarily comprised of resinous piney hops and some dark malt. The taste is aggressively hopped with bitter piney hops and then i'm getting dark malt at the back of the palate. The mouth a bit thick, lightly chalky, and sticky.

A: A dark black color with a large tan head on top.
S: Lots of grapefruit and citrus. Some roasted grain as well as a touch of coffee, hops are definitely the centerpiece on this one.
T: Bright with grapefruit and tangerine, followed by a touch of earth and then roasted grain.
M: Medium with a decent amount of carbonation. A bit light feeling for me, with a bitter cling that I like.
O: Overall a pretty decent Black IPA. I'm not a huge fan of this style, but this one seems pretty good.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into an IPA glass.
Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger tan head which slowly settles into a thin creamy layer.
Smell: A resiny and fairly roasty hop forward aroma with a scent of pine, citrus, and roast. Upfront hop presence with an earthy scent of pine resin and grass. Citrus hop hints of grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. Moderate malt presence with some roasted hints of toast, chocolate, biscuit, and grains with some yeast. A solid hoppy aroma.
Taste: Like it smells, a resiny and slighty roasty hop driven taste with notes of pine, citrus, and roast. Ripe upfront taste of earthy hops with notes of pine resin and grass. Citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, and tangerine. Mild roasty malt notes of toast, chocolate, biscuit, and grains along with yeast. Pretty ripe and bitter. A solid hoppy taste.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and pretty oily with a drying finish.
Overall: A pretty solid take on a Black IPA. Very pine hop driven with some roast that comes through more with some warming.
