1st review of this beer on BA. Another maltyboi review from the Single, Fresh, Wet & Wild Hop Harvest Festival in Chico, CA on the Sierra Nevada estate.
There were so many malty or not hoppy beers at a festival meant to showcase hops, it boggled the mind. This one was at least a hoppy, wet hop red ale. Red ale pours red. Beige head, 1/4". Aroma is mostly caramel/toffee tag team notes, but there was a noticeable use of strong bittering hops as well. Would guess Centennial or Chinook.
Taste also brings the Nugget hop as a possibility here too. Its not a top tier hoppy red ale, but it is definitely more interesting than your average red ale, hoppy or not. I think as long as you're not expecting Nugget Nectar/Loakal Red/Pataskala levels of excellence, you won't be disappointed here. Sure its malty but its a red ale, but it isn't thick or heavy enough that the well placed carbonation and bittering hops with notes of pine needles and bark can't mix it up with this base. Good.
