On tap at Churchkey. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a moderate yellow color and it doesn't really seem like the barrel has imparted much of anything right here. The nose is light grain and hops and some odd dry cardboard and hints of fruit. The barrel aging isn't all that prevalent, and doesn't add much to the beer, though this is not nearly as good as the regular version. It actually just tastes sort of like an off regular pils with some light fruit flavors. Very weird indeed. Not a big fan.

Congratulations Oskar Blues, you've ruined your pilsner.

Seriously. What the hell were you thinking? Has barrel aged beer culture really gotten us here. This beer was so profoundly horrible I ordered the REGULAR pils so I could confirm my memory of actually liking this beer. CUT IT OUT. There is nothing magical about barrels. You can't improve ALL beers from exposing them to air and wood and wine / liquor residue. I'm getting quite sick of it. The only reason why stouts taste better after being barrel aged is because they are so complicated that you don't taste the off flavors imparted by them. Next time you are possessed to put a beer this light into a barrel, take a step back and think to yourself, "Will this taste like ass?" and then don't do it.

Beer served on draft at Churchkey in D.C. Aged in a port wine barrel, sigh. Beer is yellow and has some haze to it. Head is minimal and still manages to leave a lot of lacing on the glass. Carbonation appears to be lower than I remembered but that's OK. So far so good....

Aroma is about the same as the base beer here. Slightly sweeter (I ordered the base beer Mama's little yella pils for comparison). A little fruitier, I suppose that could be some port coming through...

Oh holy hell, this tastes like a can that has been rolling around in the trunk of a car all summer but also oxidized. It tastes like apples and metal with a harsh aftertaste of fake butter. Its like drinking rotten fruit mixed with beer. After several ounces I calmed down and could detect some raisin character at the back that saved this beer from me just telling the bar tender I was completely done. The more I drank the better it got but it never made it to "good." The regular version is quite pleasing however and I quickly finished that one.

From 08/02/10 notes. Had on tap at Churchkey in DC.

a - Pours a golden color with 2 inches of fluffy white head and light carbonation.

s - Smells of oak, wheat, pale malts, and yeast.

t - Tastes of some pale malts, bready malts, oak, and an odd fruity taste.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - An ok beer, but not too much different than the normal Yella Pills. A little bit of oak and some odd fruity taste that might have been the port, but not something I'd probably seek out again.

Poured from the tap a nice golden color with a decent amount of white foam. My wife and I drove up from Denver for a couple beers and dinner. One of the attractions of this place is the barrel aged versions of Oskar Blues' beers. This trip, this was the only option and I ordered it with brimming exctitement, however, despite their best intentions, the end result ended up much like the original version: a good solid pilsner, with just a hint of the advertised port. Good, but...
