Black Ale isn't really a style of beer, but rather a subjective name given to many beers when they really don't fit inside the realm of other dark beers like Porter and Stout. Our Black ale was developed with a particular hop in mind - Sorachi Ace - and was brewed for Schlafly's Fresh Hop Festival this year. We used a lot of dark roasted malts to balance the intensity of the Sorachi Hops and played to the hops strength as a first addition bittering hop. The end result is a rich, slightly creamy ale that has notes of citrus underneath layers of roasted aromas.

On-tap at the brewery.
A - Pours a dark brown/nearly black color, mocha-colored head, thin ring, wisps on otp.
S - Nice amount of roast, toasted malts, bitter chocolate notes, and a slight touch of bitter hoppy notes.
T - Very similar to the nose. The hops are a little more pronounced here, but the malt and roast are still very much up-front. The finish is toasted sweet malts.
M - Light body, good carbonation, clean roasted finish.
O - A solid Black Ale, but did't blow me away. Very easy to drink and goes down as a 6% beer should.
