This dark brown beer serves its namesake right. A short head on top leaves thin webbed lacing around the glass. This dunkel lager also serves its namesake well with taste. I tasted something like kilned malt, with light cocoa and a kiss of grass. However, this beer is vastly undercarbonated, which takes a hit on an otherwise delectable dunkel.

a delicious take on this style too, these guys have the english and german stuff so well dialed in, its downright impressive. this is a little lighter than many of these, but i like it being so drinkable and easy on the alcohol, something you could very easily and happily make an afternoon out of. clear and lighter in color too, but with a tall and lacy head on top. slight banana element to the nose, but this is a more mild strain of yeast, or perhaps fermented a bit cooler, not the high fruit and spice complexion we can sometimes see, instead its all about the malts, nutty and sweet at the same time, with notes of brown sugar and maple in here, even dried cherry for a moment, root beer, and german lager yeast. they have done a great job with this, i like it being on the lighter side, and like most all of the beers we had in here, the quality and attention to detail in the brew house is through the roof. these guys are really on it with these old world styles, some of the best i have had from the united states, across the board!

 

Pours a clear, dark brown color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of pale malt, grain, strong sweet malt, and slight hop. Fits the style of a Dunkelweizen. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight sweet malt, caramel malt, slight pale malt, and a hint of hop. Overall, the body is too sweet, and the complexity is lacking.

Aroma- Has a nice, sweet malt crisp aroma. Very light but caramel and light toastiness do come around. Wish it was more rich.

Appearance- Received with a 2 finger head that is frothy and has good retention. Dark brown color body with good clarity. Leaves nice, dark lacing behind.

Flavor- Has a malt dominant taste with caramel and sweetness hanging out the entire drink. Almost no bitterness but a light hop flavor is present.

Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, Medium-High Carbonation, Smooth, and has a nice slick mouthfeel.

Overall Impression- For a Dunkel, very appropriate for the style and light enough bodied that I could drink two back to back. Would definitely recommend if you are in St. Louis or better yet, trade me for a Growler of it!
