The body appeared black in the dimly lit main pub room; creamy, brown head. The aroma delivered scents of charred grain, coffee, and bitter chocolate. The flavor seemed almost smokey in character; bitter; flavors of charred wood. Medium-heavy body; rich and smooth; slightly sweet finish that ends up more dry on the palate at the end.
A rich and robust dark ale that capitalizes on a balanced approach of dark malt grain sweetness with some grain husk dryness. Hop bitterness nicely supports things, too.
