no such thing as too much maple in my world, so i was a huge fan of this sweet anniversary release from bull and bush. so glad they bottled it too. what a dramatic flavor profile to this beer that looks shockingly sturdy and rich for how low alcohol it is. the maple is really forward in it, but doesnt make the finish all that sweet which is pretty cool. and it has an amazing coffee low note to it, roasty and earthy and dried and exciting that really accentuates the maple and makes it last longer. bakers chocolate flavor here too, some useful bitterness there from the dark malt. only a medium body, i expected this to be much larger, but it seems to let the maple shine more, and it sure makes it easy to drink. very smooth though, never thin, and not too carbonated. its hard to get this much maple into a beer and have it not be a sweet mess, very well done with this tricky and special ingredient. this beer begs for an oak barrel, i hope they pulled some off to rest awhile, i could see that really taking it to the next level. these guys never disappoint. thanks to drlovemd87 for sharing!

Maple Stout for Bull & Bush's 45th anniversary. Bottled: 07/14/16 in 500ml brown glass bottles.

APPEARANCE: Vibrant khaki head quickly dissipates (within 45 seconds), leaving no lacing. Body is a dark cola-brown black, a colour that's a bit weaker than your usual opaque black.

It looks undercarbonated, but I'm excited to try it. A Maple Stout? Oh boy!

AROMA: Maple sugar, dark malts, chocolate malts. No roasted barley here, unfortunately.

It's a simplistic basic aroma for a maple stout, and I'm not sure I find any actual maple syrup (just maple sugar), but I find it inviting for what it is.

TASTE: There's some maple flavour there, but it isn't entirely genuine; I doubt actual maple syrup was used (probably just an artificial flavouring). Aside from that, all I find is a generic one-two punch of dark and chocolate malts. It's imbalanced, leaning on the sweeter side. I'd expect sweetness in a good maple stout, but this flirts with coming off cloying.

Pretty simple and basic fare.

TEXTURE: Coating, sticky, smooth, wet. Not as thick or syrupy as you might expect a maple stout to be. In fact, it's somewhat weak on the palate, thinning out towards the finish.

Carbonation is off, but I can't tell in which direction.

OVERALL: The Bull & Bush's release of Legend of the Liquid Brain got me to start giving the brewpub a lot more attention. I was hoping that since this is a stout it might come close to the quality showcased in that beer, but in actuality this is the latest in a string of hum-ho mediocre brews I've tried from them since the Legend of the Liquid Brain release, and may be the final nail in the coffin in terms of me paying active attention to what they put out.

Peel away the gimmickry of the fake maple and you're left with a generic mediocre stout build.

Another Year Again is a great name for this 45th anniversary beer since it conveys the apathy towards an anniversary you would expect to find in a husband who takes his wife out to, say, Denny's for their 45th (and it also conveys the disappointment the wife would feel afterwards)...but at least Denny's actually brings syrup to the table.
