a tasty new ipa from one of our local favorites, brewed with sumo fruit, which is a citrus like an orange of some kind from what i understand. i like the beer, but its more of a fruited pale than an ipa, and although its well made and refreshing for its strength and all, it really didnt impress me as much as i thought it would, and the hops never really make it through the grain or the fruit. its a little bigger for a summer flavor profile, at 7% abv and with some fairly sturdy malt structure, its a bit weighty for what it is i think. the citrus flavor is fresh, and it adds both a tropical juicy sweetness, and also a peel and pith bitterness to it that outcompetes the hops for me. hops taste generic and underdosed, a little pine is nice, but its oddly not as fresh as it should be, and it doesnt rise up to the ipa level at any point. i still enjoyed my pour, but i was expecting a somewhat more pungent brew here. either way though, nice to see new flavors from these guys coming fast and furious, and this should be a hit in there this summer regardless of my critique...
