2020 bottle. Drank 5/23/25.
Pour is a deep amber / ruby with a nice lasting cap of tight, khaki foam. Excellent retention and lacing.
Nose is toffee, plum, grape, a twang of tannin, red wine.
Taste follows. Toffee, plum, red grapes, oaky tannin, nutty, toasted bread. A touch of warming alcohol in the stomach, but not discernable while drinking. Dry, oaky finish that invites another sip. As the beer warms and opens up a bit, more of the wine character starts to come through.
Smooth, full bodied. Appropriate moderate/low carbonation.
Overall a very good beer. The barrel and beer characters really go well together. Nicely balanced, nothing dominates. Very pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying this at 5 years old. No damage from oxidization.
