Picked up a 22 oz red waxed bottle of this beer at the brewery in Dec 2021. Been in my cellar since that trip. Im pouring at cellar temp into my trusty snifter.
The beer seems to have two layers of wax on the cap, but it comes off pretty smoothly, which is nice.
Beer pours a jet black coffee color with fizzy tan head that is 1 cm at peak and fades to a sturdy edge layer that remains through most of the sampling.
The nose is dark chocolate and some roasted malts mixing with hints of bourbon and vanilla. I dont get too much maple on the nose, which is surprising as I was expecting it to be syrupy. Oh well.
First sip reveals a medium to thick body and spacious and soft carbonation. The texture is sticky and coats my palate with each sip. This feels the part of a big beer.
Flavor is complex, but all malt driven with not any hop profile showing through. I get some brown sugar and dark chocolate mixing with roasted note and some char and a little black anise as well. Alcohol kicks through on the finish with some black pepper bite and this lingers a bit with some warmth after each swallow. Drinks like a big beer.
I wish I got something from the Maple, but the beer is pretty solid and complex, definitely a little boozy, making for sipping on this Friday evening.
Glad to have tried this one from a smaller brewery near where I grew up in PA
