32oz grunt purchased at the brewery for $6. I marked this beer as “Limited,” as I’ve never seen it before, and I neglected to ask if it as going to become a regular beer for them. Acccording to the info at the brewery it’s 7.7% alcohol and has 77 IBUs worth of hops. It was their featured beer of the week, a new thing they are doing, which incidentally dropped a buck off the price. BTW, 12 String, love the opening earlier thing y’all are doing during the week, as it dovetails nicely with me getting off work.
Poured into a nonic pint glass, this was a dark brown, but still looked brown vs black. When held up to light, things got a bit more mahoganyish looking on the edges. Big, creamy looking tan head that left lots of lace on the sides of my glass.
Sharp, piney and grapefruity hop aroma is what initially jumped out to the workers at my olfactory. There’s a little bit of roasted dark malt aroma in the background, but this seems to skew to the IPA portion of the style.
Like the nose, the taste is quite hop forward. This is a PNW IPA wearing dark clothing. The malts are mostly a background flavor, providing wisps of cocoa and molasses notes, chiefly in the second half of the taste. Per the brewery, those hops are Ahtanum, Mosaic, Centennial and Nugget. Finishes pleasantly dry.
Medium bodied, with a slightly oily, resiny mouthfeel.
Some Black IPAs I’ve had have been like hoppy stouts. This is more like what I’d imagine a brown ale or a mellow porter to taste like if someone heavily hopped it. I quite like it, but someone expecting the dark malts to do more might be disappointed. Given the opportunity, I will definitely drink this again.
