A 330ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2013, so it's somewhat out of date. I figured that with the massive ABV it wouldn't matter too much. Acquired ages ago from Beeritz in Leeds. Arbor's Freestyle Fridays #21 - a huge imperial stout.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A very dark brown hue that appears blacker than deep space in the glass. Virtually no head; yields a thin film that disappears almost immediately. Not the most auspicious appearance. Aroma of sweet, fruity malt with hints of dried fruit, molasses, roasted malt, mild burnt grain, hints of coffee/cocoa, faint yeast and a warming whiff of booze. A touch of sherry in the background - mildly oxidised.

Tastes of dark, fruity malt with a lingering bitter finish. Notes of roasted malt, burnt grain, dried fruit, molasses, brown sugar, port/sherry, mild coffee, subtle cocoa, earthy yeast and a twinge of liquorice. Slightly sweet, with an alcoholic character and a prolonged, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with low carbonation and good body for the style. The booze gives it a faintly oily feel on the tongue. Pretty astringent, followed by an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, dried fruit and alcohol.

Rather good - a big beer with a big character. Not the best looking stout; the lack of head made me worry that it had gone off. However, the aroma and flavour are right on point with plenty of roasted malt, fruitiness and booze in evidence. Nice, silky body. Overall - a solid brew that hits the spot. Worth sampling if you have the chance (though I admit this is unlikely).
