A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2013. Picked up recently from Trembling Madness in York. As the label states, this is hopped with a single variety 'Dr Rudi' from New Zealand. Expect pine needles and lemongrass.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A rich golden-amber hue with faint haze and light carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy white foam with decent retention; it lasts for a while before reducing to a surface layer. Aroma of subtle fruity hops with notes of white grape, melon and faint citrus. This is underpinned by mild caramel malt, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Pleasant but much more subdued than I expected.
Tastes of light aromatic hops with a dry finish. Notes of white grape, melon, grass, faint grapefruit, a hint of citrus, earthy yeast, mild caramel malt and stewed hops. Well attenuated, with a subtle bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with low carbonation and good body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of mild aromatic hops, bitterness and earthy yeast.
A solid brew, though the hop character is less vibrant than I imagined. Looks nice, with a mild aromatic hop character to the aroma/flavour. White fruits and faint citrus, yet none of the pine claimed on the label. Body is good but a bit more effervescence would be welcome. Well-balanced and drinkable - worth trying, however not a stand-out effort.
