A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2013. Picked up a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. Freestyle Fridays #23 - described on the label as the result of using some smoked malt, crystal wheat and rye, with a reduced hop load (presumably by Arbor standards). Sounds like they just chucked whatever they had lying around into the mash tun!
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy coppery-brown hue with decent carbonation and ultra-fine sediment. Yields a huge head of creamy off-white foam with good retention; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Some lacing. Aroma of mild caramel malt with hints of chocolate, brown sugar, a twinge of rye/grain, faint fruity hops and earthy yeast. Slightly sweet.
Tastes of grainy caramel malt with a yeasty character and a dry finish. Notes of caramel, mild roasted grain, rye, faint brown sugar, a twinge of chocolate, hints of dried fruit, earthy yeast, very delicate citrus and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, with a slight sourness and a whisper of smoke. A subtle bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of dry yeast, stewed hops and faint malt.
A decent brew but rather muddled - the result of too many random ingredients. Looks alright, but the aroma and flavour are indistinct and vague. Predominantly yeasty, with grainy malt and a touch of rye discernible. The smoked malt hardly makes itself felt and aromatic hops are sparingly used. Body is OK but could be thicker and creamier for the style. Drinkable enough but off-target. No need to seek this one out.
