A 500ml bottle with a BB of July 2013, so it's literally just out of date. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Described on the label as 'Freestyle Fridays #24', a collaboration with Harbour Brewing Co that resulted in a strong brown ale with a Belgian twist. Not quite sure what the Belgian element is...
Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A very hazy coppery-brown hue with tons of visible sediment and light carbonation. Forms a small head of fine off-white foam that dissipates after a minute or two. Aroma of sweet, fruity malt with hints of barley sugar, caramel/toffee, subtle roasted grain, faint pine, yeasty esters, a touch of spice and stewed hops. An indistinct mish-mash.
Tastes of sweet caramel malt with a yeasty/hoppy character and a bitter finish. Notes of barley, brown sugar, caramel/toffee, fruity yeast esters, apples, mild pine, earthiness and stewed hops. Quite sweet but dry, followed by a dank bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly; full-bodied yet undercarbonated and lacking in texture. Rather astringent, with an aftertaste of sweet caramel, bitter pine and fruity yeast.
Interesting but a bit of a mess. I'm still not sure what the Belgian twist is - could be the yeast or just the high ABV? Or maybe candi sugar; who knows? It looks rather clouded and a decent head would have been nice. The aroma and flavour are all over the place - too sweet, yet also vaguely fruity/yeasty along with a hoppy bitterness. Smooth body but underwhelming carbonation. This is more miss than hit; I have no idea what the brewers were hoping to achieve when they created it. Bizarre. No need to seek it out.
