Bridges.
If you lived or worked in New York like I did, you had to cross over many of them to get to where you were going. Given my line of work as a cabdriver, dealing with them was a formality so when I saw this at the Whole Foods in Williamsburg a few weeks back, I had to give it a go. It was a plus that this was a collaboration with LIC as I always enjoyed their offerings as this was a nice mix between their Coded Tiles and the Bronx Brewery's American Pale Ale, as this was nicely flavored and balanced at the same time.
This had a hazy and muted goldenrod hue to it that was topped off with a moderate head as the liquid left thin rings of lacing down the side of my pint glass. The aroma has plenty of Carapils, Flaked Oats, White Wheat, white grape, wine, champagne, and earthy hops to it as the taste was equally dry, brut, and softly slick on the palate as this had an oddly pleasing flavor profile and feel to it. With plenty of body and balance, this was indeed an American Pale Ale but for some reason, was not quite as good as the sum of it's individual components. The taste was from the left coast but without with accompanying resinous mouthfeel that would have made this fully pleasing. Instead, this was a beer that was plenty naturalistic and rustic without the brightness needed to offset the grain and malt that was lastingly present here.
Thankfully, the booze wasn't too noticeable as I only felt a mild warming effect and the carbonation was on the light side, as well. Like so many beers that I've had as of late, there wasn't anything stamped on the bottom of the can, inslucing the date, although this looked and felt fresh since there wasn't any sediment or floaties to be seen. Lots of ingredients and thought went into this but the end result was a brew that was still lacking something and needed a bit of upkeep, much like the bridges that it paid homage to. Enjoy this once, but then get the two beers that were the basis for this, to see the potential that this could have had...
