Nice looking beer: poured a dark chocolate dark color with a 2F head in a Stone Pint glass, which I prefer for
Black IPAs.
Excellent aroma: vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt. Very pronounced and fading with warming to a more roasted malt aroma.
Very malty for a black IPA. Heavier body, which I like. Sometimes, black IPAs, can be thinner. This beer is very malt forward.
I would have liked the aroma to follow to the taste which is mostly dark roasted malt, with a light malty bitterness.
I am not sure how dry hopping with Simcoe affects the character of this beer, but it is certainly a different flavor profile than other black IPAs.
My second beer from this Western MA brewer. Both are excellent. This beer is different than other black IPAs. There is far deeper chocolate and vanilla, and more malt forward. Quite enjoyable. I look forward to drinking more of their beers.
