Midnight Stout

Taste: smokey dark toasted chocolate malt, coffee notes, bittersweet with dry like finish. Same with the nose. Black/brown hue, mostly opaque, with delicate head and lace. Medium/full body. Balanced.

 

The midnight stout was probably my second favorite offering from Olde Peninsula. It poured an opaque black with white head that did not lace. The scent and taste carried roast and espresso. The mouthfeel was a little too light for my taste and the carbonation was subtle. Overall its ok.

Growler poured into a Sam Smith's imperial pint.

A- It had a beautiful pour. 1-1/2 finger, dense, creamy brown head and a near black body (reddish-brown edges when held to light). Head sustains at a light foam and leaves excellent, foamy rings.

S- Lots of roasted malts. Some coffee and chocolate, and a solid dose of raisin when at its coldest. Sugared coffee with warmth.

T- As aroma suggests, milk chocolate and some pleasant charred grain. Reminds me of the chocolate oatmeal I make with chocolate chips. Light, sweetened coffee.

M- Medium-full body. A little grainy/chalky (not in a bad way).

O- It's probably the first I've had in 15 years. An old college brew that stands the test of time. A big thanks to my wife for picking up the growler. Easily a session brew with full flavor, though ABV is a little high to do so.

 

 

 

 

 

Pint on Pint Night Wednesday

Pours nicely on the nitro-tap. Pretty much strait black with a dark brown head that was pretty tiny from the effects of the nitro-tap.

Has a nice malt loaded aroma. Chocolate, milk, cream and a little bit of coffee dominate the nose.

Coffee is the prominent flavor with chocolate and roasted malts also present.

Love the change to the nitro-tap here. I've found that few beers are enhanced with the nitro-tap, but this is one that certainly is. The nitro adds to the medium to thick body and upgrades the smoothness of the beer.

A delightful brew, but I really enjoy this on the nitro-tap.

Reviewed on 6/27/2010. On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and sweet malt. Flavor of sweet malt with some roasty notes. This is a rather plain stout flavor-wise, although it is easy drinking. Overall a decent stout if you're not looking for something super special.

Had on tap at a buddies house last night.

A- Poured a black color. One and a half finger mocha colored head. Good retention on the head. Ringing lacing along with streaking on the glass as I drank it down.

S- Roasted malts dominate most of the aroma. Light chocolate notes along with coffee linger throughout the aroma. A clean smelling beer without being too commercial smelling. If that makes sense.

T- Nice roasted malts in the front of this dominate all the way through. Some light coffee and chocolate notes through the middle. Although, this stout is somewhat bitter there is a nice sweetness to this as well. Some light hopping in the backing makes this beer a little balanced but still a nice malty flavor overall.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the stlye. Roasted malts dominate the palate and long into the aftertaste. Flavors were clean and overall well put together. Alcohol had light drying but nothing much else.

D- The drinkability on this is very good. I had many pints over and it never really killed me. A good drinking stout that well does what it should. Cheers to that! The world has too many over the top stouts that are drinkable but lack the drinkability. Glad this one stays very sessionable.

Pours black. Roasty and mocha in the nose. Good balance of chocolate, coffee and maltiness. Clean finish from what must be a nice amount of hops. Almost a sweet stout IMO. Not that their other brews are not good, but this is far and away the best. Enjoy playing darts or the golden tee and having a few of these. A bigger beer that it might seem, after three or four the 6% abv starts kicking in. Usually knock down to the brown or pumpkin or red after a couple.

Pours jet black with a light tan head. In the aroma, roasty coffee and maltiness. In the taste, roasty coffee and a small hop. A quite smooth and a medium mouthfeel, and a dry roasty coffee in the aftertaste. Nice coffee and maltiness, yet kind of standard for a stout.

This was poured from the tap at the brewpub. The color is jet black with a small head. The aroma has a minor roasted malt smell, but not really inviting. It has a rich chocolate and roasted barley flavor. There's not much hop flavor to speak of, but it is well balanced. It has a very full body with low carbonation.

This is a good stout, not exceptional, but tasty. It's a decent drinking beer, but probably not my preferred choice of the evening.

Middle of the road brewpub style stout.

Essentially think Guinness with a bit more flavour.

Appearance was chracteristic stout jet black, but there was very little head, and that left in short order. Smell had some hints of coffee and chocolate, but nothing overpowering.

Taste was a tad above average, basically take 'generic stout' and add some more chocolate to it, a hint of bitter, and some rememberences of coffee and you have Midnight Stout.

Mouthfeel was anemic, watery, and generally sub-par for a stout IMHO and likely due to it's low 4.5% ABV content. Drinkability was good, but not surprising given it's lighter weight profile.

A good beer to drink with a meal (I had the London Broil, great pairing) but nothing to stop by for by itself.

Truly a “black patent malt” stout. Taste is full of French roast coffee and Special Dark chocolate. There are hops here, but they only say “hi” after you swish it around with your tongue. Strong taste that cuts through a mouthful of salty chips. You'll probably want to save this one for last if you're sampling brews at this fine establishmnet. They'll make it part of a black & tan, but I had to drive.

This beer was as black as sin. It had a huge, dark tan head that left some nice circular lace. An aroma of malt and hops with a equal portion of coffee and chocolate. The flavor was of roasted malt and herb with some sweetness of chocolate and a touch of coffee. A medium body and a dry finish. A pretty good stout.
